Sigmund Freud and his work marked the cultural history of the 20th century. He was not only the creator of psychoanalysis, he was a great interpreter of the time in which he lived and his theory influenced all the thought that came after him. Freud and psychoanalysis made a fundamental contribution to our understanding of ourselves with the notion of the unconscious and the deep reflection on what lies behind it. To build his theory, Freud investigated the great human conflict: what we desire as subjects in contrast to what society wants from us. And as each era produces its symptoms, the notion of what “freedom” means must necessarily change from the moment that autonomy can no longer be seen as a fundamental horizon of rational action.
