Freud's theory of psychosexual development states that we go through five critical stages as we grow up. Our sex drive, which Freud called the libido, is focused in a different erogenous zone at each stage. The stages are called: oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital. If our experience in any of these stages was traumatic, we may develop fixations later in life, such as neuroses, dependencies, addictions, or depression.
