Poverty-induced migration from Europe at the end of the 19th century led to a veritable flood of European refugees eager to reach America. Young sailor Alex Grove, looking for a job, finds work on the Esperanza, captained by Grove. The young man realizes that this man was his father, although he had thought he was dead. Captain Grove, however, has a secret: he welcomes European emigrants on board, eager to start a new life, and earns a lot of money from them. Because he is afraid that he might be brought to justice, he abandons them at sea on a sandbar, telling them that on that "shore" America begins. In reality the bank is flooded by the tide, and people are drowning. At one point Alex finds the emigrants, by chance, locked in the hold. Neither he nor the people knew what fate awaited them. Believing that they are really to be taken to America, he steps into the place of one of the emigrants, and as it is dark, is abandoned with the others on the bank, where he meets his end. Captain Grove learns of the mess, but it's too late. The evil he had done to others now fell upon himself. QUESTION: What is the value of human life? When a man's life is at stake, does it matter whether he is an acquaintance or a stranger? ------------------------ Cast: Toma Caragiu, Virgil Ogășanu, Mircea Albulescu, Fory Etterle, etc.
