The well is the gateway to the fantastic world of Frau Holle. She rewards the hardworking and punishes the lazy. Frau Holle makes it snow when she shakes up the beds - everyone has probably heard that before and wondered: How can that be? But there are even more secrets in the fairy tale that cannot be deciphered at first glance. One of them is the well - a place charged with multiple meanings. In Germanic mythology, the Norns sit at the well, spinning the thread of fate for people. In the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, it is the gateway to a different, fantastic world. Frau Holle herself does not make her first appearance until late in the fairy tale. She is an enigmatic figure. Researchers argue about who is actually behind it. There is agreement that she goes back to ancient female deities. The ancient Roman Diana, the Germanic Freya - there is much to suggest that Frau Holle can be placed in the same category as these and others. But there is an explanation for why the memory of this mythical figure has largely disappeared: the monks who spread Christianity in what is now Germany over a thousand years ago did a thorough job.
