The ruins of Frankenstein Castle stand on a mountain spur above the municipality of Frankenstein in Rhineland-Palatinate and are a type of spur castle. It got its name from the noble family of Frankenstein who lived there. The ruins that have been preserved today consist largely of the remains of the three-part palace from the 13th century that once belonged to the lower castle, which mostly dates from the late Staufian or early Gothic period. The most valuable architecturally is its lancet windows and the preserved, multi-storey chimney system. The remains of the upper castle can be reached via a rock staircase. They consist mainly of the ruins of the watchtower from the original fortifications from the 12th century.
