Its history begins from the moment when, on 3/10/2022, the first Greek refugees from Argyroupoli, Pontus, came pursued by the Turks, after the Asia Minor Disaster of 1922, and settled in the area, which until then was deserted and uninhabited. There was not even a chapel in the area. The forty uprooted families may not have brought many things from their households with them. But they did not want the treasure of their faith to be desecrated. As many holy icons, ecclesiastical relics and sacred utensils as they had in their churches, they brought them with them. Arriving here, they wanted to build a temple to place their sacred treasures inside, but also to be able to pray and celebrate the Holy Mysteries. Around 1925, the first small Church dedicated to Saint Barbara the Great Martyr was built, and it became the center of the newly arrived community. Little by little, the small community of Nea Argyroupoleos grew in population and the small church no longer served the needs of the parishioners. In 1958, the construction of a second larger temple began next to the old one. With many sacrifices and with the personal work of the parishioners, a beautiful church was completed in a short period of time, in the style of a three-aisled basilica with dimensions of 10 X 15 m. In the years that followed, Nea Argyroupoli became a populous city and sometime later the second holy church was considered small for the parish. Then it is decided and founded a third magnificent holy temple that encloses the area of the second temple. The construction of the new sanctuary began in 1990 and the main construction work was completed in April 1995. The dimensions of the new sanctuary are 21 X 33m, and its rhythm is a three-aisled basilica with a dome and two imposing bell towers. Stone wall cladding and roof tiling have also been designed. The official Opening Ceremony of the new Church took place on April 12, 1995 under the Reverend Metropolitan of Nea Smyrna Kyros AGATHANGELOS, while the Inauguration was performed by the Reverend Metropolitan of Nea Smyrna, Mr. SYMEON, on October 16, 2005. Today, the external stone cladding of the walls is in progress , the tiling of the roof, while the canonization of the interior of the Holy Church is planned, with icons and sacred representations of Byzantine style, as is required in all Orthodox holy churches.
