Fortschritt E516 combine harvester (GDR advertising film) DVD No. 21 at: [email protected] The development of the E516 was started by Fortschritt in the first half of the 1970s. The aim was to create a combine harvester that would do justice to the increasing areas of LPGs. Series production of the E516 began in May 1978. By 1983, 7290 E516s had been produced. The E516 was significantly larger than the E512, which was still in production. The threshing drum with a diameter of 800 mm, 10 hammer bars and a width of 1625 mm was one of the largest on the market. The large diameter was particularly advantageous for gentle threshing of the grain. The remaining grain was separated using 5 horde shakers. Cutting units up to 7.6 meters wide and corn pickers up to 8 rows were available as harvesting attachments. The grain tank had a volume of 4500 liters. With a hydrostatic drive and an engine output of 228 hp, the E516 was also state-of-the-art in terms of engine performance and driving comfort. An automatic steering system was also developed for the E516. This consisted of a beam that was attached to the outside of the cutting unit. The beam was guided as close to the edge of the crop as possible. Two touch sensors were attached to the beam, which recorded the distance to the standing grain over the length of the beam. The correction for the steering angle was determined from the difference in the deflection of the sensors. The aim was of course to fully utilize the width of the cutting unit and to relieve the driver. Due to production bottlenecks in Singwitz, production of the E516 was relocated to Bischofswerda in 1983. This also included a number of improvements to the E516. The speed of the V8 diesel was reduced from 2200 to 2000 rpm. This increased the stability of the engine and reduced consumption. The combine harvester was now given the designation E516B.
