You can find the complete Past Forward episode in the ARD Mediathek: https://1.ard.de/pf_ultras?yt=spio Smoke-filled fan stands in the football stadium, roaring crowds, aggressive or even violent football supporters. And one term keeps cropping up: "Ultras". What defines this scene - are Ultras just another name for violent hooligans? The fact is: Ultras don't have the best reputation - violence, racism, homophobia, sexism, pyrotechnics - all of these are topics that are associated with them. But is that really all and how has Ultra culture in East Germany developed over the past decades? Leipzig fan expert and historian Alexander Mennicke is doing his doctorate on "East German identities in football stadiums" and classifies topics such as right-wing extremism and violence in football stadiums - with a special focus on the early 1990s. Felix Nebel, now a fan supporter at 1. FC Magdeburg, was part of the Magdeburg ultra scene until 2017. He explains why choreographies are so important for the scene - and what you can learn from the "ultra community". Past Forward reporter Rieke is with him on a very special day at FCM - when the Magdeburg fans celebrate 50 years of European Cup victory with a march and choreography.
