For years it was believed that our destiny was written in the genes we inherited from our parents, therefore in our DNA, which can be damaged by environmental causes, such as radiation, viruses, mutagenic substances or other, but which we cannot modify. In the second millennium this presumption has been modified: DNA, in fact, contains a million switches that can turn our genes on and off and modify their action; we can act on these switches with food, with physical exercise and, as has recently been demonstrated, also with the mind, with meditation. It is the epigenetic revolution. Dr. Franco Berrino, physician and epidemiologist of the National Cancer Institute, spoke about it as part of the conference series "Prevention Wednesdays". On Wednesday 4 February, from 6 to 8 pm, in a packed Aula Magna like never before, Berrino presented the results of numerous studies on which the scientific community is still wondering. “Biomedical studies have demonstrated the existence of an immensely complex network of ancestrally conserved metabolic signaling pathways that, if appropriately modulated, can prevent or slow the accumulation of cell damage, increase the duration of disease-free life, or facilitate healing,” explains Dr. Berrino. “The word Karma means ‘Action’. To what extent is each of our actions the result of our free thought? To what extent is it the result of something else, of an action, of a Karma, of a destiny that we do not see, of which we are not aware, but which is part of our very nature as thinking mammals? Which traces of gene activation/deactivation inherited from our ancestors and accumulated over the course of our lives condition our reactions, our behavior, and even the risk of getting sick?” In the full recording of the conference, all the answers from Dr. Franco Berrino.
