Satirist and philosopher Florian Schroeder knows what he is talking about when he writes about evil: his father was a convicted criminal. Nevertheless, he does not think much of the category of evil: it demonizes the other person instead of understanding them. A conversation about contradictions, madness and humor. Topics in this episode: 00:00 Was your father an evil person? 09:10 Why are there only evil deeds and no evil people? 18:31 Why is "wanting to understand" important? 24:20 Can every person be parodied? 34:12 Why is dichotomous thinking poisonous for politics? 42:57 Why is it important to confront the "opponent"? 53:33 Why does the exchange with "opponents" remain important? When the world is divided into black and white, evil experiences a renaissance. And the evil is always the others, says Florian Schroeder. The well-known comedian, who makes so many people laugh, wants to understand evil and for his book he met psychologists, sex offenders, teenage thugs and a man who led a double life. Schroeder pleads for leniency and is certain that no one is fundamentally evil, but rather the circumstances that make someone act wrongly. But should and can we really understand every atrocity? Doesn't understanding almost mean excusing it? And how far does one's understanding extend when inhumane slogans are spread? Barbara Bleisch talks to Florian Schroeder about the art of understanding and its limits and about what comedy has to do with understanding.
