It was written in 1940, and had different popular versions, corrected and expanded in 1950 and 1957 by the author himself. The work is considered folklore of the Venezuelan people and has been adapted to film, theater, and television. Considered the best horseman and coplero belonging to the Llanos of Venezuela, Florentino attended a joropo in the town, however, he noticed that a stranger dressed completely in black was following him to go to the party. Florentino prepared begins the song in the joropo while the stranger in black challenged him to counterpoint. Accepting, Florentino begins to cross verses and realizes that his opponent is the devil and, if he loses the counterpoint, he would also lose his soul. As a good improviser and full of faith, Florentino did not make a mistake in any rhyme, keeping the devil singing throughout the night. After the sun rose, the devil disappeared, defeated.
