Today we will visit one of the most evocative places in Florence: the Romanesque church of San Miniato al Monte. A masterpiece of Florentine architecture, it is, together with the Baptistery of San Giovanni, the most important Romanesque building in Florence. According to tradition, Miniato, a prince of Armenian origin, was persecuted and martyred in 250 during the reign of Emperor Decius. After being beheaded, Miniato would have taken his own head and deposited it in this place where he had been a hermit. It is known that this mountain had already had a sacred character since Etruscan times, as the first settlers saw the sun rise right here. In the 8th century there was already a church here dedicated to San Miniato the martyr. The current church was built from 1018 (this year is the millennium anniversary!) and was not finished until 1207, the date that appears inscribed on the floor of the central nave. Climbing up to San Miniato and standing in front of its beautiful two-tone marble façade bathed in the evening light, and especially entering the church and listening to the monks singing their Gregorian chants, you feel a very special emotion, a sensation very different from that transmitted by the bustling city below. The energy and peace that this place transmits cannot be described in words. You have to be there to feel it. If you go to Florence, don't miss a visit to San Miniato. Moreover, from here the views over this incomparable city are wonderful!
