This earthquake was the strongest earthquake ever recorded in Asia, and the third strongest earthquake ever recorded in modern history, after the 1960 Valdivia Earthquake and the 1964 Alaska Earthquake. This earthquake was the longest fault, with a length of between 1,200 km and 1,300 km (720 mi to 780 mi), and had the longest duration of shaking ever observed, at least 10 minutes. This earthquake caused the entire planet Earth to vibrate 1 centimeter (0.4 inches)[17] and triggered earthquake activity in various regions, including Alaska.[18] The epicenter was located between Simeulue Island and Sumatra. The suffering of the people and affected countries encouraged various countries to provide humanitarian assistance. The total financial losses due to this disaster reached USD$14 billion or around Rp. 51.4 trillion, so it took more than 5 years to recover to pre-disaster conditions.
