In this class, we will study how bonds are broken (scissions) in organic compounds. Every reaction begins with the breaking of chemical bonds for subsequent rearrangement of atoms. Understanding how these scissions occur can give us a clue and an indication of how the reaction mechanism will proceed. Both homolytic scissions (homolysis) and heterolytic scissions (heterolysis) will be discussed with examples, as well as the concepts of free radicals, carbocation and carbanion, electrophilic reagents and nucleophilic reagents.
