But how do you find out if the wiring is really doing its job well? There are some simple procedures to find out and we will talk about them now. The copper wire conducts electricity from one point to another, but in this conduction some of this energy is always lost through the electrical resistance of the copper wire. This loss has acceptable levels that still allow the system to function properly, but in some cases where the components are very sensitive, a small loss can represent the malfunction of something in the car. A good example of this is the case of the engine temperature sensor or the fuel injectors, both work with a very specific resistance and voltage and the slightest change in the actual value causes a misinterpretation of the injection control unit and causes side effects such as excessive fuel consumption, engine failures and decreased car performance. To make sure that the wiring of these components is doing its job correctly, you need to measure the electrical resistance that the wire offers along this path. To make this measurement, you need the help of a multimeter set to the lowest possible resistance scale. Connect the multimeter test leads to each other in order to measure the resistance that the cable itself offers, and then start testing by decreasing this value. The ideal resistance value would be zero, but this value is very difficult to achieve because all power conductors have some type of resistance, even if it is small. But let's deal with acceptable values. A 1-meter wire should not have any resistance at all. From 2 meters onwards, the wire can have a resistance of 1hom. In practice, a wire from a temperature sensor or the wire from an injection nozzle is about 3 to 4 meters from the injection control unit to the other end, so it can have a resistance of up to 2hom and is within the acceptable level. If there are 3 wires, it may already be defective, and 4 wires or more greatly increase the chances of causing instability in the engine's operation and need to be replaced. If a very high resistance is found in a wire in the car's wiring harness, a common sense analysis must be made: 2 or 3 defective wires can be replaced externally in the wiring harness because the labor and cost to the customer to perform this service is so great. If there are many wires with high resistance, then it will really be necessary to replace the entire wiring harness. I hope I have clarified the procedures for testing the wiring and the importance of its proper functioning in the car. I'll stop here, thanks. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do you want to be a successful electrician?
