More #electric cars on European roads means more batteries and also more lithium. Europe cannot rely entirely on China for the battery raw material #lithium. There are now many lithium mining projects in Europe. The project in Serbia's Jadar Valley stands out because of its size, but also because of the protests against it. Michael Schmidt from the German Raw Materials Agency provides an insight into this European flagship project and comments on the environmental concerns. The German company AMG Lithium, which refines lithium into battery-grade lithium hydroxide in the Bitterfeld Chemical Park, is also ensuring greater independence from Chinese suppliers. This makes it the first supplier of battery-grade lithium hydroxide with a production facility on the European mainland. After peaking at US$80,000 per tonne at the end of 2022, the #lithium price fell to below US$15,000 by the end of 2023. The #lithium market is subject to strong fluctuations. And the very low price at the moment is damaging many lithium projects in Europe. In the Geladen podcast, Patrick Rosen and Daniel Messling and their guests discuss the topics of #energy transition, #electromobility, #electric cars and #batteries from a scientific perspective. The podcast is produced by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Geladen mugs, shirts & caps: https://geladen-der-batteriepodcast.m...
