Have you ever heard the saying “Faithful as a Fila”? I bet you have! The Fila was the second Brazilian breed to be recognized internationally, in the mid-1960s. But the history of the Fila goes back even further! These friendly friends have been linked to Brazil since its discovery, when colonizers brought several dogs for service and hunting during their journeys through the country. The word 'fila' comes from the verb 'filar', which means 'one who bites and does not let go'. This is a very special characteristic of these imposing pets. There are several theories about the origin of the Fila. One of them is that it was a mix of the Mastiff, Bloodhound and old English Bulldog. Because of these breeds, the Fila is a strong dog, which also has a great sense of smell, often used to protect cats in rural areas. These companions are also war dogs and help armies in combat.
