They have been waiting for years to get a fiber optic connection and high-speed internet. TROUBLE WITH TELEKOM Instead of construction work, one viewing appointment follows another - and this for months. Different Deutsche Telekom employees keep coming. On its homepage, Telekom keeps pushing the connection date further and further back. FIBER OPTIC EXPANSION: HOW IT WORKS During civil engineering work, the fiber optic cables are first laid from the network operator to the distribution box on the street. From there, the data still runs into the house via slower copper cable. Fiber optic can also be laid from the distribution box to the basement of a house. In multi-family houses, the cabling to the apartments is still pending. INCREASED CONSTRUCTION COSTS AND SHORTAGE OF SKILLED WORKERS There are a number of challenges for fiber optic expansion: Firstly, there is the shortage of skilled workers, but there is also a lack of construction capacity, and construction costs have risen enormously. All of this can delay the start of fiber optic expansion.
