In the old fiber optic basement video #1 from September 2nd, 2024, Stefan Hofmeir already explained to us how the two fiber optic connections in his basement work, which routers from Fritzbox to Cisco are connected to them, and how much power they use. In this new fiber optic basement video #2, he tells us today which pipes and cables were laid from the sidewalk to his basement, and the specific reasons why he decided on his two fiber optic internet connections: namely, for normal FTTH fiber-to-the-home from Deutsche Telekom, as a shared medium, for around 70 euros per month. As well as for a business fiber internet line, from 1&1 Versatel, exclusive, i.e. not a shared medium, for around 700 euros per month. And because the Federal Association for Broadband Communication, or BREKO for short, just published the latest market analysis on fiber optic supply in Germany on September 10, 2024, I'll briefly show it here: At the end of the video, we show the latest figures from BREKO on the fiber optic status in Germany: As of June 30, 2024, the fiber optic expansion rate was 43.2 percent, which is also known as Homes Passed: the fiber optic cable runs very close to the building, for example in the sidewalk. In contrast, the fiber optic connection rate is only 22.8 percent, which is also known as Homes Connected. The expansion in the area unfortunately slowed down from mid-2023 to mid-2024, according to the BREKO Federal Association. However, the number of connected households has increased significantly. Schleswig-Holstein remains the front runner in a comparison of federal states. The large state of Bavaria, on the other hand, lags behind in terms of the fiber optic expansion rate and the fiber optic connection rate. That doesn't quite fit with the high-tech image of laptops and lederhosen that is politically very popular in Bavaria.
