BOM RETIRO FARM Oliveira - MG #farm352 1777 Built in the late 18th century, still in the Imperial Period, by Ignácio Ribeiro da Silva, Bom Retiro Farm is one of the most beautiful and oldest rural properties in the south-central region of Minas Gerais. Its imposing headquarters, built around 1777, still maintains its original features, marked by 18th-century colonial architecture, from which one can deduce the customs of the time. Its surroundings are marked by preserved nature, forest, springs, watercourses, river, natural pool and waterfall. There, visitors can come into contact with a variety of animals, such as ducks, chickens, turkeys, pigs, cattle and horses, all raised freely on the farm. There are also century-old trees and fruit species, where one can have the pleasant experience of eating fruit “on the tree”. Added to this set of attractions are an ancient stone wall, a corral and a cemetery for slaves. At Bom Retiro Farm, visitors can get to know rural crafts and activities typical of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, such as the waterwheels that powered the corn mill and the sugar cane mill, and the millstones used to process and grind grains. All of these hydraulic mechanisms still work, and through them, visitors can learn how cornmeal, brown sugar and other products were produced, which can be purchased at the Farm. Another important detail in the history of Bom Retiro can be found in one of its more than 30 rooms. Specifically, in a room measuring just over six square meters, which borders the dining room. Carlos Justiniano das Chagas, better known as Carlos Chagas, was born there in July 1879. He was the Brazilian scientist who discovered Chagas disease and was nominated four times for the Nobel Prize in Medicine. We will soon return with our visits to Minas Gerais. Let's go?
