The Luchtspoor was part of the Rotterdam cityscape from 1877 to 1993. Admired and reviled. For some, the construction of the railway viaduct was a welcome modern symbol, for others an attack on the historic city centre. The route was 2.2 km long and ran from Hofplein station to the bridges over the Nieuwe Maas and the Koningshaven. The viaduct was opened on 28 April 1877 as part of the railway connection from Amsterdam to Belgium. At the end of the 20th century, the bridges, which were over 100 years old, needed to be replaced. In addition, the bascule bridge, which had to be opened regularly, formed an annoying obstacle in the north-south railway connection. After much discussion, a 4-track tunnel was chosen at the same location, with an underground Blaak station. After a construction period of 12 years, the Willemsspoortunnel was opened on 15 September 1993. The Luchtspoor disappeared from the cityscape, but the Hef was preserved as a monument. ------------- We will be uploading new videos every week so please subscribe to our channel if you want to stay tuned!
