In 1998, the NS DE2s were decommissioned, after which most sets only had a single journey to the scrapyard. However, the 180 and 186 from Syntus would continue to be used for the Almelo-Mariënberg service for a number of years. The trains were maintained in the Hengelo workshop, using parts from plucked set 164, among other things. The 180 came to an untimely end on 1 April 2001 due to a fire in the engine compartment under the floor. Although the damage was relatively limited, it was considered no longer worthwhile to repair the 180, given the age and general condition of the set. The 186 then continued to run its own tracks on the Almelo-Mariënberg line for over a year. This section of track had by then been equipped with the ATB-NG safety system, a system that was not present in the DE2s. The 186 was granted an exemption until June 1, 2002 to drive on the line without ATB, but then it would also be over for this last of the Mohicans.
