Bach Yen, whose real name is Quach Thi Bach Yen, was born on June 9, 1942, into a family of 8 children in Soc Trang. Her parents were Vietnamese people doing business in Nam Vang. From a young age, Bach Yen showed her passion for singing, but faced prohibition from her father because of the concept of "singing and singing are inferior". However, encouragement from her mother helped her continue to pursue her dream. At the age of 8, Bach Yen stood on stage for the first time singing the song "Old Wharf" in a cultural program of the Vietnamese community in Cambodia. At the age of 9, her family moved to Can Tho, where she studied at a convent school and joined the church choir. In 1952, the family moved to Saigon, Bach Yen registered to participate in a talent selection contest organized by the French-Asian radio station and won first prize in the Children's category when she was only 11 years old. Thanks to her high score, Bach Yen was accepted by the French-Asian radio station to sing in the Children's band. However, only a short time later, the French-Asian radio station dissolved, forcing her to seek out other radio stations to apply to sing but was rejected. During this time, her parents separated, and her mother decided to stay in Vietnam to raise her children in difficult circumstances. Bach Yen began to collaborate with dance halls, and the song "Dem Dong" with a slow rock melody brought her name to a new height. In the 1960s, Bach Yen went to France to study vocal music and performed throughout Europe. In 1962, she was invited to record and perform around France. After that, she went to the US and became the first Vietnamese singer to tour around the country, participating in many famous television shows. Bach Yen's life has witnessed many ups and downs. After her marriage to musician Lam Phuong failed, she met and married musician Tran Quang Hai. They lived happily together for more than 40 years until his death at the end of 2021. At the age of 82, Bach Yen still keeps her passion for music alive. She plans to celebrate her 70th anniversary of singing, recalling memories and successes in her career.
