In this podcast we discuss the increasingly popular world of family vlogging and the potential impact this has on the children who are in the spotlight every day. We see more and more families sharing their lives on platforms like YouTube, where children often play a major role. This raises the question: is it healthy for children to grow up in front of the camera? And should there be stricter rules to protect them? We start with the question whether vlogging for children should also be seen as work. While parents see vlogging as their job, the children often seem to be part of the product that is being sold. What does it mean for children to be constantly followed by the camera? We discuss the consequences of this for their development and well-being. A well-known example is the Bellinga family, one of the biggest family vloggers in the Netherlands. They share their lives every day, with their children often being the center of attention. This raises questions about the role of children in this type of content: how free are they in this situation, and to what extent do they understand the consequences of their online presence? From our own experience with creating content, we talk about the pressure that comes with regularly uploading videos. For adults, this is already intensive work, but what does this pressure do to children? We investigate whether this is a form of disguised child labor, or whether it is not that bad. We also discuss the impact of online reactions on children. The internet can be a harsh place, and children are exposed to the opinions of thousands of viewers. How can we protect children from the negative consequences of online criticism? In the final phase of the podcast, we address the question of whether there should be clear rules for family vloggers. Should there be guidelines to protect children from the pressure of being online all the time? We discuss the ethical side of sharing your family life with a large audience and the responsibility of parents in this. This podcast offers an in-depth conversation about the influence of family vlogging on children, the role of parents, and the need for regulations to protect the youngest vlog stars.
