The Jews were three tribes when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Medina: Banu Qaynuqa, Banu Nadir, and Banu Qurayzah. They broke the treaty when they agreed with the parties who came to fight the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) in Medina. When they broke the treaty and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) returned from the Battle of the Confederates, Gabriel came to him and said: Go out to these people. So the Prophet went out to them and besieged them until they submitted to the rule of Sa`d ibn Mu`adh (may Allah be pleased with him), who was an ally of Banu Qurayzah. They said: We will submit to his rule, thinking that he will do as `Abdullah ibn Ubayy did, the hypocrite who betrayed the treaty, when Banu Nadir submitted to his rule.
