In August 1969, Libya’s security services were closely monitoring movements that indicated an impending military coup. It was scheduled to take place on September 5 under the command of Colonel Abdel Aziz al-Shalhi, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, who was considered the most powerful man in the country at the time. The King of Libya, Muhammad Idris al-Senussi, was at his weakest, leaving the monarchy vulnerable. The story could have developed differently had it not been for the intervention of an unexpected figure. Captain Muammar Gaddafi, the leader of the Free Officers Organization, decided to change the date of the coup to September 1, giving him the opportunity to seize control of the country before al-Shalhi could carry out his plan.
