Ralph Caspers explains why some people do not recognize faces that should be familiar to them - and how face-blind people perceive other people and what current research into face-blindness has discovered. Ralph Caspers and with him around one to two and a half percent of all people cannot recognize faces. They are face-blind. We can normally distinguish at least 1000 other people by their faces. Face-blind people cannot do this. When looking at a face, they lack the details that others would recognize someone by. The technical term for the phenomenon is "prosopagnosia", which means "facial non-recognition". But why are some people face-blind? Science has been studying face-blind people for some time. An interesting research question is: Is there a special ability in the brain just for recognizing faces that face-blind people lack? Or is there just a general ability in the brain to recognize anything? The cause of face-blindness is still controversial. Either way, Ralph has come to terms with his face blindness in everyday life. You can find out how in the video.
