Checking beehives. On Sunday 15 April 2018, the beehives in our allotment complex were inspected in the spring. It was a mostly sunny day with quite a bit of wind. The temperature was around 15 degrees. There was a chance of a shower. There was a lot of flying going on because there was a lot to be had in nature. The fruit trees were in full bloom, so there was an abundance of pollen and honey. The hives were checked for queenlessness, food supply and possibly replacing combs. When checking for queenlessness, it is checked whether a colony of bees already has a queen. If not, they are “queenless”. When the hives are open, a towel is used to prevent heat loss. In addition, it also reduces the flying of the bees. After the checks, the hives are expanded with a honey section. This is placed on top of the other hives. A grid is placed under the honey chamber to prevent the queen from entering the honey section.
