Rita Island is located in Babitonga Bay, on the southern coast of Brazil, north of the state of Santa Catarina. It was probably once frequented and inhabited by sambaqui hunters and gatherers, the sambaqui men, more than 3,000 years ago. In 1918, the island was requisitioned by the Brazilian Navy. In 1940, a small naval supply base was built there, inaugurated with great fanfare by President Getúlio Vargas. There were oil storage tanks, coal stores and a small lodging. An underwater aqueduct was installed from the mainland, from the Saí River, to supply fresh water to ships. In the following years, during the Second World War, this supply base was used by the Allies. The naval base fell into decline after the war due to the decline of its strategic importance and was partially abandoned by the Brazilian Navy. In 1968, the Union transferred the concession of use to the administration of the port of São Francisco do Sul. ????
