On September 1, 1939, Germany attacked Poland and World War II began. At 4:45 a.m., the German training battleship "Schleswig-Holstein" began shelling Westerplatte, the Military Transit Depot in the Free City of Gdańsk, defended by a crew (approximately 200 soldiers) under the command of Major Henryk Sucharski and Captain Franciszek Dąbrowski. For seven days, it heroically repelled repeated German attacks from the sea, land, and air, becoming a symbol of Polish resistance. #Westerplatte #1september1939 #worldwarii #iiww #ww2 #Gdansk #MilitaryTransitDepot #InstituteofNationalRemembrance #Expertise #TVPHistory
