Special exhibition "Ancient capital Naniwa-kyo" Wednesday, May 19th to Monday, July 12th, 2021 From the ancient Asuka period to the Nara period, Naniwa Palace was established at the northern end of the Kamimachi Plateau. The palace was the residence of the emperor and the center of politics, and the area around it - the capital - where related people lived spread out. There was also a capital called Naniwa-kyo around Naniwa Palace. This ancient capital is now buried underground in the city, and almost no trace of it remains. As excavation surveys in Osaka City progress, the amount of materials related to Naniwa-kyo has increased. Although all of the excavations are small in area, by accumulating the results, a concrete image of Naniwa-kyo has finally come into view. This exhibition will introduce the results of the main excavations related to Naniwa-kyo, as well as various restoration plans for Naniwa-kyo to date, and look back on the process of exploring the ancient capital. We hope you will imagine what ancient Osaka was like over 1,000 years ago. Note: This exhibition is a reconstruction of the special exhibition "Excavated Naniwa-kyo" in 2020, which was canceled to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
