About :

...During the failed assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20, 1944, Hermann Fegelein was at the Wolf's Lair, the headquarters in Rastenburg, East Prussia. Fegelein suffered a minor injury to his left lower leg from the bomb blast. After the failed attack, he frequently exhibited photographs of hanged men who had been executed as a result of the coup attempt. By early 1945, Nazi Germany's situation was hopeless, with the Allies from East and West closing in. Hitler was hiding in the Führerbunker in Berlin, facing the imminent collapse of the Third Reich. The Battle of Berlin, the last major conflict of the war, began in mid-April when Soviet forces launched their attack. On April 20, Hitler's birthday, Soviet artillery began shelling the city. On April 21, Red Army tanks reached the outskirts of Berlin, and by April 27, the city was completely surrounded, sealing its fate as the war neared its end. That same day, Hitler sent some of his Gestapo bodyguards to find Fegelein, who had decided he did not want to be part of the "suicide pact" and had abandoned his post in the Führerbunker. When the SS found him in his Berlin apartment, Fegelein was drunk, in civilian clothes, and preparing to flee to Sweden or Switzerland. He had German and foreign cash on him, and jewelry, some of which belonged to Eva Braun. A suitcase containing documents suggesting planned peace negotiations with the Allies was also found in the apartment. When Fegelein was taken back to the Führerbunker, he was still drunk. He was held in a makeshift cell in the Führerbunker until April 28. That night, Hitler learned from the BBC of Himmler's attempted negotiations with the Western Allies. Hanna Reitsch, the famous Nazi pilot, was with Hitler at the time. She later described his reaction: "He grew redder and redder and his face was unrecognizable...After an endless outburst of anger, Hitler sank into a state of numbness and for a while the whole bunker was silent. After that, Hitler told those still with him in the bunker that Himmler's secret negotiations were the worst betrayal and ordered his arrest." Hitler also ordered that Fegelein be stripped of all ranks and, after some hesitation, he ordered a court martial. According to journalist James P. O'Donnell, who conducted extensive interviews in the 1970s, Hitler ordered Wilhelm Mohnke, one of his last remaining generals, to set up a tribunal. According to his testimony, Hermann Fegelein was so drunk that he cried, vomited, and even urinated on the floor. Fegelein refused to answer to Hitler, saying he would only answer to Himmler. Since German military and civil law requires a defendant to be of sound mind to understand the charges against him, Mohnke closed the trial and handed the defendant over to the security service. He never saw him again. Hermann Fegelein was 38 years old when he was taken to the gardens of the Reich Chancellery on April 28, 1945, where, as Traudl Junge, Hitler's last private secretary, described it, he was "shot like a dog." Eva Braun had lobbied Hitler to spare her brother-in-law and tried to justify Fegelein's actions. She argued that her sister, Fegelein's wife, was at the end of her pregnancy and needed him to care for her. But Hitler stood firm. To him, Fegelein's actions were nothing but deceit and betrayal. On April 29, 1945, Hitler finally married Eva Braun and the following day they both committed suicide. Fegelein's wife Gretl survived the war and gave birth to their daughter Eva Barbara Fegelein on May 5, 1945, who committed suicide in April 1971 after her boyfriend died in a car accident. Gretl remarried and died in 1987 at the age of 72. Disclaimer: All opinions and comments below are those of members of the public and do not reflect the views of World History Channel.
