He had his lawyer declare in court: "I shot." As you can see in this video, he had already admitted this in his first confession in June 2019, but later retracted it. In front of an investigating judge at the beginning of 2020, he described the act as an accident and accused the co-accused Markus H. of having held the weapon in his hand. He has now backtracked on this statement. He also apologized to the Lübcke family today through his lawyer: "What I and H. did to them will always remain inexcusable." He included the co-defendant and alleged accomplice Markus H. "What we did was wrong," Ernst added. "Nobody should die because they have a different opinion."
