The Café Nobel lecture series (http://cafenobel.ujep.cz) is organized in Ústí nad Labem, Teplice, Děčín and Tisé by the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem (https://www.ujep.cz) as part of of the RUR project – University Region, university of the region, reg. On Thursday, September 19, 2024, biologist and popularizer of science RNDr. Tomáš Petrásek, PhD. from the Physiological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague (https://fgu.cas.cz) and the National Institute of Mental Health (https://www.nudz.cz). Not only large space agencies, but also private companies do not hide their bold plans to send manned missions, or at least robotic probes, to the red planet. However, the question of life on Mars recedes somewhat into the background. Does the new space race mean hope for its solution, or is there a risk that we will never know the answer? And what awaits human beings on Mars - life or death?. RNDr. Tomáš Petrásek, PhD. deals with brain and behavior research. In his spare time, he is dedicated to popularizing astronomy and astrobiology, a scientific field that deals with the origin, development, distribution and future of life in the universe. He has also been lecturing astrobiology at Charles University since 2015. He is the co-author of the popular science book series Distant Worlds, dealing with the issue of astrobiology. At the same time, he is literary active in the science-fiction genre. He won the Karel Čapek Award in 2007 for his novella The Last Watch; it was published as a book in 2012.
