※ This video is part of <Korea Travelogue - Monk, Are You There? Part 3, The Way to Yaksaam>, which aired on November 13, 2024. Yaksaam, a 'thousand-year-old temple', is located on a thousand-foot cliff at 976m above sea level on Mt. Geumosan in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The mountain is high and rugged, so it is tiring to climb it, but it is said that just visiting this place can relieve all your worries. Starting from Doseon Cave where Master Doseon attained enlightenment, listening to the cool sound of Daehye Falls that ring through Mt. Geumosan, paying respects to the five-shaped stone pagoda built by the grandfather for his deceased grandson and the stone Buddha carved into a huge rock, Yaksaam peeps out just below the peak of the rugged rocky terrain. Monk Daehye, who says that he will never live in such a heavenly place in his life, has been guarding Yaksaam for eight years. Every morning, he circles the Doryangseok and never forgets to offer candy and coffee to tired hikers. However, it is not easy to live like a god at a mountaintop temple. Daehye monk sets out to repair the roof damaged by a fallen rock. Living in a rough area, he has no choice but to take the initiative if there is something to fix, so he has become a MacGyver monk who can fix anything. Daehye monk personally digs up autumn wild chives, makes a kimchi, prepares a valuable offering, and climbs to the peak of Hyeonwolbong with his dog Bangul to end the day around sunset. The wide open view of Gumi city ahead is spectacular.
