Hello, art history lovers! I am Belén Montilla, an art historian and a secondary and high school teacher, and in today's video we are going to travel back in history a few centuries to the years of Ancient Rome, whose inhabitants managed to forge one of the largest empires in history throughout the Mediterranean and beyond. In today's video we will discover the essential features and works of Etruscan and Roman art. Surely on more than one occasion you have heard the expression "carpe diem" (enjoy the moment), "cave canem" (beware of the dog) or that all roads lead to Rome. Thanks to the Romans we began to build large engineering infrastructures such as aqueducts, which allowed a very important supply of drinking water to the cities, which made their living conditions improve and society prosper. If you live in Spain, it is very likely that you will find some archaeological remains nearby, since Hispania was Roman for centuries. For this reason, we owe part of our customs to them, such as the way we live in blocks of buildings with different floors, which they called “insulas”, islands. Or our ideas and legislation, are based on Roman philosophy, literature and law. Much of our history derives from theirs, so understanding the Roman world will help you understand the world today and we will even put an end to some hoaxes such as that the Romans used a stick with a sponge to clean themselves in the latrines. We will begin in the 8th century BC by briefly learning about the Etruscans, a very curious and not so well-known society from whom the Romans would receive a great influence. Then, we will review the chronology of the history of Ancient Rome in order to situate ourselves and understand why certain things happened at specific times, how far the Roman civilization expanded and what were its glories and also its ruin. Then, we will go straight to analyze architecture, the art most developed by the Romans, and we will see its characteristics and main buildings, including the well-known Flavian Amphitheatre or Colosseum. We will continue analyzing sculpture, which will be very similar to the Greek sculpture that we already saw in this video. And finally, we will analyze what kind of plastic arts such as painting or mosaics the Romans created, analyzing very striking examples found in Pompeii.
