The Book of Esther is an Old Testament book that tells the story of a young Jewish woman named Esther who becomes queen of the Persian Empire. The story is set during the reign of the Persian king Xerxes (also known as Ahasuerus). The story begins with King Xerxes throwing a grand feast, during which he asks his queen, Vashti, to appear before the guests. Vashti refuses, resulting in her removal as queen. Subsequently, a search is conducted to find a new queen. Esther, a young orphaned Jewish girl, is chosen for her beauty and grace. Esther's uncle, Mordecai, discovers a plot to assassinate the king and informs Esther, who informs the king, crediting Mordecai. Meanwhile, Haman, a Persian official, devises a plan to destroy all the Jews in the empire, due to Mordecai's refusal to pay homage to him. Haman convinces the king to issue a decree for the extermination of the Jews. Esther, revealing her Jewish origins, intercedes before the king on behalf of her people. The king revokes the decree and Haman ends up being hanged on the gallows he himself had prepared for Mordecai. A new decree is issued allowing the Jews to defend themselves against any attack. The book of Esther celebrates divine providence and highlights Esther's courage at a critical moment in the history of her people. The feast of Purim is instituted to commemorate these events. In short, Esther is a story of courage, justice and God's role in preserving His people, even in the midst of difficult circumstances and threats to their existence.
