Jesus in the House of Zacchaeus 4. Now when Jesus entered Jericho, he was passing through the town. And there was a man there named Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector and very rich. He wanted to see Jesus and get to know him, but he could not because of the crowd, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead of the crowd and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, because he had to pass that way. When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and saw him and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, because I need you to stay with me today.” Zacchaeus came down immediately and welcomed him joyfully. When they all saw this, they began to say, “He has gone to stay with a corrupt man.” (See: “Introduction”, article – Publicans.) But Zacchaeus, standing before the Lord, said to him: Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor, and if I have wronged anyone in any way, I make good fourfold. – And Jesus said to him: Today this house has received salvation, because he also is a son of Abraham; – for the Son of man came to seek and to save that which was lost. (S. LUKE, 19:1 to 10.)
