For months, Ukrainian President Zelensky has been demanding that his Western allies deliver and release long-range missiles. Now, according to media reports, he has received a commitment from US President Biden to deploy so-called ATACMS missiles in the Russian Kursk region. Until now, the missiles were only allowed to be used on targets within Ukraine. The missiles are primarily intended to help defend against the Russian counteroffensive and would be a response to the deployment of North Korean soldiers in the Kursk region. The ATACMS missiles have a range of up to 300 kilometers and could therefore hit targets in the Russian interior. Zelensky justifies the demand for release, among other things, by saying that this is the only way to reach Russian military airports, from which fighter jets would take off to fire glide bombs or missiles at Ukrainian targets. The Western allies have so far rejected the demand to use the missiles on targets in Russia, as there were fears that this could lead to a further escalation of the conflict. Chancellor Scholz reiterated his position that he does not want to supply long-range missiles to Ukraine. Has the release of the missiles reached a new level of escalation? What are the reactions to this decision at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro? Will Germany follow suit and supply long-range missiles? Alica Jung will be speaking about this live on ZDFheute with military economist Marcus Keupp and ZDF capital studio manager Diana Zimmermann from the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro. #ukraine #usa #putin 00:00 Intro 01:22 Military economist Marcus Keupp on the significance of the clearance for the Ukraine war 04:45 Graphic: Range of various missile systems 11:18 Statement by Scholz on the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles 11:43 HSS director Diana Zimmermann on Scholz's stance 17:34 Military economist Marcus Keupp ----- Here on ZDFheute News you can find out what is happening in the world and what concerns us all: We provide insight into the world of news, explain the background and address social debates.
