Erwin Rommel is controversial. He was Hitler's favorite general, was admired by friends and enemies as the "Desert Fox" because of his service in the African campaign, and was the most popular star of Nazi propaganda. Some still hold him in high esteem today, and Bundeswehr barracks are still named after him. For others, he was involved in a murderous war. Did he know about the planned assassination attempt on Hitler, or was he just a career soldier? The often-quoted myth about Rommel originated in Libya, which the Italians threatened to lose to the British in 1941. Hitler sent Rommel to help. By 1942, he had driven the British almost 1,500 km east to El Alamein, where the decisive battle took place. After ten days, Rommel retreated against Hitler's wishes. At the end of the fighting in North Africa, 130,000 German soldiers were taken prisoner. Rommel was not among them. He is now responsible for German defense against an Allied landing. When the landing takes place on June 6, 1944, the superiority of the Allies is overwhelming. After a few days it is clear: the battle is lost for the Wehrmacht - and with it the war in the West. Rommel and his chief of staff write to Hitler demanding that he end the war, something no other German general has dared to do. Some time later, Rommel is seriously wounded in an attack. It is the end of his career. After the failed assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20, 1944, Rommel's name also appears to have come up several times during interrogations. Finally, in mid-September 1944, a committee tasked with excluding suspected officers from the Wehrmacht essentially passes the death sentence on Rommel. For the sake of his threatened family, Rommel decides to commit suicide and have a state funeral.
