Excerpts from the book “The Art of Living” by Epictetus. Epictetus or Epictetus (55 - 135) was a Greek philosopher from the School of Stoicism. His birth name is unknown, “epiktetos” means “acquired” or “bought”, because when he was still a boy he was bought as a slave by Epaphroditus, one of Nero’s administrative secretaries. Very early on Epictetus showed exceptional intellectual ability, and Epaphroditus decided to send him to Rome to study with the renowned Stoic teacher Gaius Musonius Rufus. Epictetus became his most brilliant student and was eventually freed from slavery. From student, Epictetus became a renowned professor of philosophy, teaching in the capital of the Roman Empire until 94 AD. Epictetus seeks in his thoughts to highlight the practical side of philosophy in order to develop morality, spreading the idea that philosophy should be lived, and not merely discussed. For Epictetus, desire is one of the main causes of human unhappiness. And one of the main goals of his philosophy is the pursuit of happiness. How can we live a full life, a happy life? How can we be a person with good moral qualities? For Epictetus, a happy life and a virtuous life are synonymous. Happiness and personal fulfillment are natural consequences of correct attitudes. Thus, the cure for men who suffer from their passions happens through virtue. The School of Stoicism is a philosophical doctrine based on the laws of nature, which emerged in Greece in the 4th century BC, founded by the Greek philosopher Zeno of Citium (333 - 263 BC). Stoicism deals with timeless issues, such as dealing with adversity, negative emotions, knowing oneself and investing energy in what matters. For the Stoics, human perfection was based on the idea that human beings are connected to nature. Thus, they must deny their desires in order to fulfill a will guided by reason in accordance with this nature. That is, a philosophical current where “virtue” depends on the will subordinated to reason, being considered the basis for achieving happiness. The truth is that those who subordinate reason to their feelings of the moment are in reality slaves to their desires and aversions. They are not prepared to act with dignity and effectiveness when unexpected challenges occur, as is inevitable”. Epictetus. “Do not seek happiness outside, but rather within yourself, otherwise you will never find it”. Epictetus. “Nothing can truly be taken from us. There is nothing to lose. Inner peace begins when, instead of saying about things “I lost this”, we begin to affirm “This has returned to where it came from”. Did your children die? Did they return to where they came from. Did your possessions and property get taken from you? Did they also return to where they came from. Why suffer when what you received from the world is being returned to it?” Epictetus.
