The Enigma – which means enigma in German – was the most important German encryption device in World War II. It was used to encrypt secret military messages so that the enemy could not break them. The Enigma was not only used by the German secret services, the SS and the Reichsbahn, but above all by the Wehrmacht, the Luftwaffe and the Kriegsmarine. Between one hundred and two hundred thousand devices are said to have been built. They are part of the basic equipment in submarine warfare. Their functionality is subject to the strictest secrecy. At the time, it was one of the most secure coding machines in the military telecommunications system in the world – until the British military succeeded, at great expense, in deciphering the German secret. Alan Turing, a British computer scientist, is one of the leading minds at Bletchley Park. He developed the so-called "Turing Bombe", with which the British could crack the Enigma's daily keys.
