This is J from the Book Reading Attic. Today, I would like to spend some time thinking about 'life' with you through Hermann Hesse's book, 'Enduring Life'. People are similar to each other and it seems like the way they live is similar, but there are billions of people and billions of different lives. Everyone tries to define why they live and what life is in their own way, but it is not easy to get the answer. And even if they do, it cannot be a universal or absolute truth. The unexpectedness, coincidence, and fate that life brings can make our plans pale in comparison and lead to a life that is completely different from the present. I think the author titled this book 'Das Leben Bestehen' (Enduring Life) because of these characteristics of life. I introduced Hermann Hesse in [Maybe It's a Good Age] in September. Let me briefly introduce him again along with the background of the writing of this book. He was born in 1877 in the small mountain town of Calw, Germany, and spent his youth in pain and wandering, such as dropping out of seminary and attempting suicide. Hermann Hesse entered the path of a writer in earnest when he published the autobiographical novel [Peter Camenzind]. This book [Enduring Life] is a collection of poems and prose about the meaning of life and dreams he discovered in the process of overcoming hardships in life, such as his father's death, his wife's schizophrenia, and his son's illness, leading to a nervous breakdown and hospitalization in a nursing home.
