“Sugar is poison!” “Sugar makes you fat!” “Sugar is like a drug!” “Sugar gives you diabetes and FATTY LIVER!” “You should avoid sugar!” “Fruit is sugar. So you should avoid fruit too!” Uh… NO. “But sugar is sugar, right?” No. Not that either. Carbohydrates is the collective name for all those different types of sugars. All sugars behave differently in the body. Monosaccharides include: fructose. Fructose is metabolized in the liver and does not increase blood glucose or insulin levels. Glucose, on the other hand, is absorbed from the intestine into the blood and is taken up into muscle, liver and fat cells in response to the release of insulin from the pancreas. And then you also have sugars such as: Disaccharides Oligosaccharides Polysaccharides What you need to remember for your own health and lots of energy is the following: The wide range of countless different types of sugar in products such as fruit and vegetables is crucial for optimal health. Eat it. The more the better. Your body cannot do without it. Your life depends on it. The healthiest centenarians on earth (despite all their differences) always have a diet that consists of about 80% carbohydrates. Sugars! This is not a plea for eating junk food and refined sugars. Don't worry about fruit. In fact, don't worry at all. Do eat lots of good fruit with every meal. There is a very good chance that your body will become healthier than ever before.
