In a matter of weeks, the three-century-old autocratic regime embodied by Tsar Nicholas II collapsed, leaving its allies stunned. A wind of hope and freedom blew over the country, but the continuation of the First World War plunged Russia into chaos. In October, the Bolshevik party, although a minority, took power by force, brutally shattering the democratic dreams of the first revolution. Claude Anet, a French journalist in Petrograd, the center of events, gives us a unique account of this revolutionary adventure which, in nine months, changed the destiny of humanity.
