Emotional dependence is based on the fear of being alone. The emotionally dependent person accepts an unsatisfactory relationship, sometimes even abusive, because they are blocked by the fear of being without that bond that represents for them the most important source of security, self-esteem, identity. In order to maintain the relationship, they accept to indulge the needs of their partner even when they conflict with their own, to the point of molding themselves to the requests of the other and putting aside their own needs in order to protect the emotional balance of the relationship. In this way, an unbalanced dynamic is created that leads the emotionally dependent person to develop a feeling of impatience, anxiety, anger, but these emotions must be stifled or at least limited in their expression in order not to run the risk of being abandoned. In fact, separation is experienced by the emotionally dependent person as an unacceptable event, which confirms their total lack of value and the impossibility of being loved.
