This is my introduction to Elias Rukla. He is a high school teacher, in his fifties, Norwegian, living in Oslo. You understood this from the chapter I read, didn't you? It is also clearly stated in the chapter that he is a little bored with life, his monotonous life does not make him very happy anymore, and his relationship with his wife does not have the same excitement as before. Well, there is also a sentence about something changing: that day will be the turning point in Elias's life. How will it happen? What will happen that will change Elias's life? Let's not have great expectations, ladies and gentlemen. Don't prepare yourselves for extraordinary events by thinking that a great tragedy will occur, a great adventure will begin, dragons will descend from the sky, aliens will come, a new love will peek through the door, an old love will come out from around the corner, diseases, deaths, murders, wars will come one after another. We will remain in the folds of Elias Rukla's mind, we will only follow his past, present and thoughts about the future. Of course, somewhere there we will encounter our own past, future and present. In other words, we will experience the real big adventure in Dag Solstad’s novel Embarrassment and Honor. Our ordinary adventure… Dag Solstad always does this. That’s exactly why I like Solstad’s novels. Since I met him, and today’s introduction book is Embarrassment and Honor, which we will focus on, I have never missed any of his books published in Turkey. He has a special place in my heart because he reminds us of the power of literature to describe ordinary people, or let’s be more sincere, obscure people, and perhaps its real purpose and what kind of language should be used while doing this. Don’t think that our Dag is such an easy man. He is definitely not a piece of cake to swallow. A bit tortuous, twisty, repetitive… Long paragraphs… Flashbacks, thoughts, thoughts… This is another reason why I love him. It forces you. But it is such a force that it makes you fall in love with yourself. You know, we are always drawn to difficult people in order to fall in love, sometimes we, the readers, are drawn to such difficult writers. These are beautiful challenges... Well, since we are embarking on such a difficult journey, I should take a solid conversation partner with me, right? I need a serious older brother, so to speak. That's what I did. I called Ömer Türkeş, who closely follows Scandinavian literature, whose knowledge and perspective on literature I admire, and who is one of the rare values of our country in the field of review, essay and criticism. Thank God, Ömer Ağabey did not disappoint me, and honored our studio. Shall our Dag Solstad chat begin then...? #denizyücebaşarır #benokurum #dagsolstad #ömertürkeş #embarrassment and dignity
