The play focuses on a few days in the life of George Simon, who rose from a humble Jewish ghetto on Manhattan's East Side to become a cunning, highly regarded attorney at the Simon & Tedesco law firm. Early in his career he allowed a guilty client to lie because he believed the man would change his life if he was released. Francis Clark Baird, a rival lawyer, has learned of the incident and threatens to expose him. The risk of public scandal terrifies his wife, Cora, who plans to elope to Europe with Roy Darwin. Devastated by his wife's infidelity, George is about to throw himself from his Empire State Building office window.
