El Salvador has taken a major step in its economic policy with the approval of the General Law on Metallic Mining on December 23, 2024. This law, backed by President Nayib Bukele, allows the extraction of minerals such as gold, which is estimated to be able to generate up to $131 million in revenue. The legislation revokes a ban that has been in place since 2017, when El Salvador became the first country in the world to ban metallic mining due to environmental risks. Although it has generated strong criticism from environmental organizations and the Catholic Church, Bukele defends this measure as key to revitalizing the country's economy and generating jobs. Despite warnings about the environmental impact, the government is continuing with its plan, highlighting that El Salvador's mineral reserves could significantly increase the country's Gross Domestic Product.
