The North African campaign was one of the most important fronts of the Second World War. After several unsuccessful operations by the Italian army against the British, the German Africa Korps under the command of Erwin Rommel, nicknamed the Desert Fox, fought a series of bloody battles for control of Libya and Egypt in a constant tug-of-war with the Allied forces. Finally, the troops commanded by General Bernard Law Montgomery managed to stop the Axis forces in the decisive battle of El Alamein at the end of 1942.
